Astronaut
Astronaut Furukawa ready for liftoff
Tatsuya Kimura / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writer
BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan--"I pray for swift recovery of quake-hit areas. Tomorrow will be a better day," Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa said ahead of his flight on a Soyuz spacecraft scheduled for launch on Wednesday.
Furukawa offered these words of encouragement for people in areas hit by the March 11 earthquake at a press conference held Monday to speak about his planned 5-1/2-month mission on the International Space Station.
The press conference was attended by Furukawa and two other crew members--an American and a Russian--at a special hotel for astronauts in Baikonur. They spoke to reporters through a glass window to avoid catching colds or other viruses before their flight. "I'm lucky I have wonderful colleagues. We're ready for [our Soyuz] flight," Furukawa said.
Furukawa was a surgeon at the University of Tokyo Hospital who became an astronaut candidate in 1999. However, problems arose with the schedule of the U.S. space shuttle program, and the upcoming flight with the Russian Soyuz will be his first journey to space.
From the ISS, Furukawa plans to chat with people in areas afflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The spacecraft will be launched at 2:12 a.m. on Wednesday.
